In the fall of 1987, widespread enthusiasm for expanding the network of scenic byways across American caused more than 30 organizations to join together to sponsor the first national conference on scenic byways. The sponsors, comprised of national highway, tourism, recreation and conservation groups, saw the need to draw together federal, state, and local interests to discuss the future of scenic byways. Scenic byway interests, the sponsored believed, would benefit greatly from the opportunity to share expertise and discuss common issues in a national forum. |
