Such was the unpredictability of weather in September that two major events in Devon 13 days apart experienced contrasting climatic extremes. Devon General Remembered in Newton Abbot was bathed in sunshine, while the remnants of Hurricane Lee deluged the Kingsbridge Running Day with low cloud and monsoon-like rain. The Devon General Society ran ten buses on September 3 on free services linking Newton Abbot with Bovey Tracey, Denbury and Lawes Bridge, with open-toppers on the route to Teignmouth, Two preserved Southdown single-deckers, 1965 Marshall-bodied Leyland Leopard 122 (BUF 122C) and 1977 Leyland National 34 (PCD 80R), re-ran three Southdown routes on September 23 - the once weekly 288 (Horsham-Chichester), 63 (Chichester-Petworth) and 79 (Petworth-Horsham). Here they navigate Chichester, South Street at the start of the 63 journey to Petworth. Friends of King Alfred Buses chairman James Freeman was driving the Leopard. |
