However remote some rural British bus stops may be, they're in the heart of civilisation when compared to one at Emmdale in the Australian outback, which Basil Hancock visited recently. As he explains, you can reach the frontier mining town of Broken Hill in the west of New South Wales by direct train from Sydney only once a week by the NSW TrainLink Outback Xplorer service, a 13hr 30min journey of 1,125 km (699 mile). It goes out from Sydney on Mondays, returning Tuesdays, but if those times don't suit then there's a one-a-day alternative involving a coach. You take the XPT (Australian version of the British HST) from Sydney to Dubbo (462km or 287miles) and transfer to a connecting NSW TrainLink coach for the 754km (469mile) trip to Broken Hill, which takes a completely different route from the train. This is numbered 589 westbound, taking 9hr, and 590 eastbound, taking 9hr 10min. Be warned that Broken Hill follows South Australian time, which is 30min behind the rest of NSW, so two timings are provided at Broken Hill. |
