Several Local Transport Authorities are warning that the increasing costs of running bus services threaten both commercial and subsidised routes. West Yorkshire Combined Authority is reporting tender prices increasing by as much as 30%, while in some cases no bids at all are being received. It warns that it could cost as much as £7m extra per annum to maintain the current network. Nexus is proposing cutting back on some "poorly performing" services to attempt to remain within its budget. Six groups of routes are proposed to be modified or withdrawn entirely. Nexus says that "Some customers may be required to walk longer distances to access alternative services" and may have "to purchase multi-operator tickets to allow travel on services provided by different operators". It hopes to make changes at the end of March. The routes are currently run by Arriva, Gateshead Central Taxis, Go North East and Phoenix Coaches. |
