A report in October 2021 Fleet News prompted a memory of around 30 years earlier. It was that Diamond North West had been running service 470, the Rammy Rambler between Bolton and Ramsbottom, using an open-top Alexander ALX400-bodied Dennis Trident. It reminded me that this was not the first time that a seasonal open-top double-deck service had served the area, as Rossendale Transport had pioneered one that included Ramsbottom in its itinerary. The vehicle used was 20 (VTD 720T), an East Lanes-bodied Leyland Atlantean AN68A/1R that had been new to the municipal undertaking in 1979 and then converted to open-top in 1991 via the tried and tested method of being driven under a low bridge - in this instance in Rochdale. |
