Forty years ago, Volvo watchword was "Care for the Environment". Today in 2023, that is the mantra every vehicle manufacturer is focusing on in every section, whether it be bus and coach, commercial vehicles, or private cars. In January the opportunity presented itself for me to visit the Volvo Bus plant at Boras in Sweden. Boras lies 63km (39 miles) due east from Gothenburg, and 405km (250 miles) from the Swedish capital Stockholm. Boras was historically known for its extensive textile industry. The Volvo Bus manufacturing site covers some 30,000 square metres and employs just over 400 on a one shift basis, five days a week. The assembly part of the plant is some 1,700 square metres. The factory was opened in 1977, and the land was previously agricultural. The plant was one of the first bus production facilities in the world to operate solely on renewable energy, i.e., biofuels and hydropower. |
