Preliminary data for the first six months of 2022 shows that 14 of the 20 countries surveyed saw increased road deaths compared with the first six months of 2021. However, the majority of the 20 countries saw lower road deaths in 2022 than in 2019. According to the data, road fatality levels were 12% lower in the first six months of 2022 than in the first six months of 2017, 2018 or 2019. The report shows that traffic volumes increased in 2021 compared to 2020 but were still lower than in 2019, in the pre-Covid period. For France and Germany, traffic volumes in 2021 were 9% lower than in 2019. It is worth noting that 2021 can still be regarded as an abnormal year as some countries still had lockdown measures imposed, as in 2020. This did have an effect on road crashes, reducing the number of incidents. |
