摘要: By the end of the soybean harvest season, the cost of shipping soybeans from Brazil to Shanghai during the 2nd quarter was from 63 to 145 percent greater than the same period last year. During April, as the Real continued its appreciation against the U.S dollar, Brazilian producers held their grain off the market, hoping currency stabilization would improve farm prices. However, at the end of the harvest season (end of May/beginning of June) they could hold no longer and were forced to sell, increasing truck and ocean transportation demand. Truck rates more than doubled in Rio Grande do Sul, increasing 115 percent. Second quarter ocean rates increased significantly for all ports compared with 2006. This more-than-two-fold increase in ocean rates was caused by a strong Brazil export transportation demand combined with increased global demand for bulk shipments such as coal and iron ore, and port congestion in Australia. Total transportation costs to Hamburg followed the same trend. Transportation costs represented about half of the total landed cost of shipping soybeans from North Mato Grosso (MT) to Shanghai and Hamburg. Transportation cost as a percentage of total landed cost increased from 10 to 75 percent (depending on the port) over last year for all routes to Shanghai and Hamburg.
