Total Brazilian soybean transportation costs were 12 to 21 percent higher in the 3rd quarter than the same period last year. Ocean costs increased 13 percent due to an increase in fuel costs, increased soybean and corn exports to China, and appreciation of the Real against the U.S. dollar. Truck rates varied across regions, decreasing by 10 percent in some states and increasing as much as 48 percent in other states. An increase in transportation demand for limestone and fertilizers caused the rise in truck rates as the grain planting season began. The cost of shipping a metric ton of soybeans 100 miles by truck increased from $6.62 in June to $7.37 in March. |
