Road markings are necessary road safety features, needed equally for human drivers and for driver-assistance systems. As was shown, they are not a meaningful source of pollution. Research has shown that while road markings can and do add to the contamination of the environment with microplastics, this occurs seldomly and only in areas of extraordinary abrasion. The prior theoretical calculations seldom were shown to be incorrect because of improper assumptions. Importantly, the relative contribution of road markings to microplastic pollution is insignificant in comparison with contamination from other road-related sources. The solution to further minimise such pollution is very simple: maintain road markings at the highest standards and use highly durable solutions -not only the environment would benefit, but foremost the drivers. |
