摘要: The US looks set to benefit from a major programme of bridge repairs and upgrades. This has been a long time coming and there have been reports over several years of the poor state of bridges in the US. According to a 2021 report from the American Road Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), there are over 220,000 bridges in the US that need to be repaired or replaced. Shockingly for a developed nation, that figure represents 36% of all US bridges. The 2021 report from ARTBA highlighted that 45,000 bridges in the US are structurally deficient and in poor condition and was based on information from the US Department of Transportation's 2020 National Bridge Inventory (NBI) database. The ARTBA report revealed that if the US bridges in poor condition were placed end-to-end, they would extend for more than 10,000km in total. Nor are the defective bridges limited to small and obscure spans in rural areas by any means. Two notable bridges on the list are the US Highway 101 span over the Los Angeles River and the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge, both of which carry very heavy traffic loads. However, it now looks as if the US Government is beginning to tackle the issue properly, with plans to invest more than US$27 billion on bridge improvement works over the next five years.
