Hanson Contracting paved a 600m-long stretch of victoria Road in Ferndown in Dorset, UK, with around 900tonnes of 'low carbon' asphalt which combines two technologies: Hanson's ERA warm mix and Shell's Cariphalte Ultra CarbonSink binder. Victoria Road was set to be the finish of stage seven of the Tour of Britain cycle race, but the eight-stage tour ended prematurely at the end of stage four due to the death of Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ on 8 September. The 180km Dorset leg of the race would have run between West Bay and Ferndown. The combination of producing the asphalt at a lower temperature and using the bio-binder means that the mix emits 25% less carbon than a standard hot mix, according to Hanson. Shell has not said what type of plant is used in its CarbonSink binder because it may vary depending on where it is produced, but tall oil pitch is a commonly used bio-binder. Hanson Contracting, which was to be an official sponsor of stage seven of the Tour of Britain, also trialled HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) to power its equipment, rather than diesel, which it says can cut emissions from construction plant by 90%. |
