The global shift away from petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles towards electric vehicles (EVs) will undoubtedly reduce dangerous nitrogen oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO_2) emissions. However, the arguably more serious particulate emissions - PMx - could increase with the growing uptake of electric vehicles (see box, paticulars about particulates). That is because EVs are typically heavier and cause more wear and tear to tyres and road surfaces, throwing particulates from these into the air. Keeping vehicles moving smoothly without unnecessary braking and stopping will pay dividends for curbing these emissions. Reducing a vehicle's journey times by just a couple of minutes can have a profound effect on reducing emissions. Imagine 20,000 vehicles passing through a junction in a day. If only 10% of these vehicle journey times can be reduced, it will have a major impact on reducing emissions and particulate matter. To this end, smart traffic management is essential because it will improve traffic flow and reduce journey times through urban areas. |
