On May 2020 Ragn-Sells started construction of the first Ash2Salt process plant at the group's recycling site at Hogbytorp just outside Stockholm, Sweden - a €50 million (US$50.6 million) investment. A key partner is Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI), a Swiss environmental technology company specialising in industrial plants, from design to construction and integration of technical solutions. For the Ragn-Sells plant, HZI is responsible for the design and construction of the plant which will be up and running by the autumn, in time for winter 2022/23. Initially, the plant will be able to receive and process up to 135,000 tonnes of fly ash annually - just under half of the 300,000 tonnes of fly ash that Sweden produces each year. Right now, around half of this 300,000 tonnes is sent to a discontinued limestone quarry on the Norwegian island of Langoya, near Oslo. This practice means that neither resources nor toxic substances are extracted. Additionally, the Langoya quarry will reach maximum capacity and close down within a few years. |
