Machine-control technology has come a long way over the past 30 years. Laser-guided systems were used to control earthmoving machines such as dozers and graders, allowing them to deliver accurate curves and gradients. But the systems were costly and the work they could deliver was limited. Concrete paving is another sector in which stringless machine-control systems were accepted early on. These offered benefits as they eliminated the need for vulnerable stringlines onsite. With many personnel on a construction site, not to mention machines moving around and materials being delivered, the risk of a stringline being damaged was always there. Being able to eliminate the stringline allowed contractors to carry out concrete paving jobs comparatively easily. |
