摘要: This report summarizes the experimental apparatus developed in the Transportation Air Quality Laboratory (TAQ Lab) at the University of Vermont to compare light-duty diesel engine performance and exhaust emissions when operating on petroleum diesel (henceforth referred to as petrodiesel) and biodiesel fuel blends. This work was conducted between July 2008, when the Armfield, Ltd. Light-Duty Diesel (LDD) Engine Dynamometer Test System (Model CM-12) was received, and June 2013. The engine housed in the CM-12 unit is a Volkswagen (VW) SDi 1.9 liter industrial engine, similar to those used in on-road vehicles similar to the VW Jetta or Golf, but without a turbocharger or exhaust aftertreatment. The objective of the research was to evaluate how the alternative fuel, biodiesel, would affect emissions and engine performance (fuel economy and torque) relative to the baseline petrodiesel. In this preliminary report, the experimental apparatus is described in detail and emissions results are presented for a series of steady-state tests with petrodiesel and soybean biodiesel blends.
