I's been a tough couple of seasons for passenger vessel operators. Arguably, it is the workboat sector that has been hit hardest by the Covid pandemic. The passenger vessel industry went from the hottest workboat sector to the coldest. Some operators saw business drop as much as 90% from previous years. Operators have had to deal with all the virus variants, mandates, mask and sanitation protocols, supply chain woes and higher costs for everything including labor (that's if they could even find qualified workers). As Dale DuPont writes in this month's cover story (see page 26), most operators have survived, but it hasn't been easy. They've had to be flexible, such as postponing boat refur-bishments and other maintenance, and reducing boat capacities and sailings - all while burning through reserves. |
