Protecting material handling in the port industry has never been more important, with record volumes being shipped through the world's gateways making it vital to keep disruptions of operations to a minimum. The number of containers shipped per year is now estimated at 200 million, meaning fires, such as the one in 2021 at the Port of Shanghai, which led to the suspension of transporting high-risk goods for two weeks, will hugely affect supply chains and profits. The effects of COVID-19 - and the necessity of continued operations from a distance - fast-tracked the adoption of automated vehicles in the ports industry, enabling a large portion of workforces to work from home with new technology. This is paired with the sustainable, worldwide push for electrification of vehicles and machinery across the ports industry. However, these changes also bring about new fire risks, which need to be addressed to ensure maximum safety and minimal downtime. |
