The proximity of the Panama Canal has clearly had some positive effects on Central America's neighboring ports in the past. For over a century, the canal has been playing a paramount role in the connectivity of the Pacific and Atlantic trade. Throughout these years, the ports surrounding the canal have benefited from their direct access as well as their container transshipments.
