Since 2019, port operations in Port Sudan, in Sudan's Red Sea state, have regularly been disrupted by protests and political violence, driven by intercommunal rivalries and evolving power dynamics across Eastern Sudan. Separately, the Sudanese military seized power in a coup on 25 October 2021, derailing transitional arrangements made between the military and a now dissolved civilian government that had been sharing power since the ousting of former president Omar al-Bashir in 2019. On 21 November, ousted Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok was reinstated in his position by the military, but protests have continued, rejecting any deal with the military. |
