On 23 June 2018, Odfjell-owned tanker Bow Jubail collided with a jetty in the Port of Rotterdam. As a result, the ship lost 217 tons of bunker fuel in the surface water. Over 150 parties, including the Rotterdam Port Authority, port-based companies, and shipowners that were in the port at the time of the spill, suffered losses resulting from the pollution. Odfjell was held liable for losses reportedly totalling approximately €80 million and subsequently filed a request with the District Court of Rotterdam to limit its liability globally. Global limitation of liability refers to the right conferred upon shipowners to limit their liability for designated claims arising out of the same incident to a certain amount. |
