The Torrey Canyon disaster in 1967 continues to be a poignant reminder to the oil industry of the importance of universal standards of safety and best practices. In that year, the 61,263 GRT Suezmax tanker ran aground off the United Kingdom's southwest coast, spilling about 100,000 metric tons of crude oil into the waters. This catastrophic event galvanized industry efforts to do better, as a collective. It is for this reason the Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) was formed by a coalition of energy companies seeking to collaborate on how to mitigate risks in the construction and operation of terminals, tankers, barges, and offshore vessels. |
