During World War Ⅱ, Bordeaux in France was a strategic base for the German troops who occupied the city from the end of June 1940. The city's location near the Atlantic Ocean, its port facilities, and distance to the British enemy made it a very attractive choice. As part of the occupation, the German navy built a submarine base in the north of the city that is today living a second life as a massive digital art space. Now visitors can enjoy, for example, Joaqufn Sorolla's painting Walk on the beach. Sorolla is considered to be one of the leading Spanish painters of the 20th century. The installation combines his paintings with visual and audio effects of cascading waves, sails moving in the wind, and kids enjoying a day out at the beach. |
