It is well known the maritime world is facing a major ecological transformation. Understandably, the yachting industry is not exempt to necessary decarbonisation. And it is willingly committed to this mission, evidenced by international conferences, trade fairs and exhibitions at which the topic is regularly on top of the agenda. It is also shown by the many new technical developments that are launched to achieving carbon compliance. The yachting industry is taking on a pioneering role within the maritime community; hybrid, electric, battery and hydrogen energy systems are gaining popularity, whether for »normal« yachts or the increasingly marketed Explorer types. An impressive range of eco-friendly products are now on offer, developed either by suppliers or in direct cooperation with shipyards. We take more than one look or glance at these »green« developments in this second issue of HANSA YACHTS. And if we broaden our view a little wider, we can even think about ways to expand the pioneering role. The early adoption of green technologies by the yacht market can inspire significant environmental best practices for other shipping segments that must decarbonise (i.e., ocean-going and merchant shipping). |
