This report documents the August 23, 1995, version of the Freight liner Trucks Involved in Fatal Accidents, 1991-1993, dataset. Tbe report summarizes all the information in the computerized data file. That file contains records for all the medium and heavy trucks tbat were involved in a fatal accident in the united States during calendar years 1991-1993. (Alaska and Hawaii were included for the first time in 1993.) Trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, primarily pickups, are excluded as nonsample. All the vehicles described are from the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) files for 1991 through 1993. The FARS files are developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The 1991-1993 TIFA file combines sample files for 1991 and 1992 with a census file for 1993. The goal of sampling was to limit the number of interview cases while preserving the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the TIFA file. Accordingly, after the FARS cases were matched with OMC cases (described below), and after nonsample vehicles were removed from the file, sampling was done on cases that the FARS configuration variables showed to be either a straight truck with no trailer or a tractor pulling a semitrailer. Those two truck configurations are the two most common as well as the two most likely to be identified accurately in FARS. The BOdy TY,pe and Vehicle Trailering variables in FARS were used to identify the trucks for sampling. After removing the cases matched with OMC reports (which are included in the TIFA file with certainty) and sorting to ensure even coverage across the accident year, an interval selection procedure was employed within each accident state to select every other case. The cases thus sampled are included in the file with a sample weight of two. The remaining cases in TIFA include the cases from 1991 and 1992 that were matched with OMC, the 1991-1992 cases that, from the FARS coding&, did not appear to be a straight truck |
