On Jan. 4, President Joe Biden traveled to northern Kentucky, where he gave a speech beside the Brent Spence Bridge, the aging structure spanning the Ohio River between Covington and Cincinnati. The event occurred just days after the governors of the two states announced that the federal government would pay nearly 50% of the estimated $3.6 billion cost to construct a new bridge parallel to the existing span and rehabilitate the existing bridge. For Biden, the event offered an opportunity to highlight one of the signature achievements of his presidency to date: the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in November 2021. Also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the act provides $1.2 trillion for infrastructure spending over 10 years, including $550 billion in guaranteed spending to be disbursed in the first five years. |
