The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) does routine roadwork (rehabilitation) on two-lane rural highways where traffic must be narrowed to one lane through the construction work zone. This operation involves the use of traffic control signs and flaggers to stop the motorists and a pilot car to lead the drivers through the one lane work zone. A preliminary study the of fall 2002 was two-fold: first, to determine the driving publics desire to know the anticipated wait time when approaching a work zone with a pilot car operation; and second, to determine a practical notification method. Surveys of drivers waiting in line (the queue) at four different pilot car work zones showed the driving public had a desire to be notified of the anticipated wait time when approaching a pilot car operation (Baer et al. 2012). |
