The largest capital project in the history of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) marked a series of milestones in January with the completion of the Red-Purple Bypass project and the groundbreaking of the North Belmont Red-Purple Reconstruction project. Both are part of CTA's Red and Purple Modernization Phase One, which will improve rail service reliability, comfort and convenience for customers by modernizing and replacing century-old structures and rail stations. The Red-Purple Bypass project unclogged a junction originally built in 1907 and allows for additional Red Line trains to operate during key periods. The North Belmont Red-Purple Reconstruction project will demolish, rebuild and realign the CTA tracks between Belmont Station and W Cornelia Ave.; work that is expected to be complete by 2025. |
