Many patients become hypothermic after severe injury due to environmental exposure during transportation and during resuscitation efforts following trauma. A portable fluid infusion warmer prototype has been designed, built and refined for administering fluid or blood components into the body at or above body temperature of 37 degrees Celsius to avoid hypothermia. This proof-of-concept device incorporates a high density thermal battery technology to allow for rapid fluid warming in the absence of external power sources. The device is capable of heating 1 liter of fluid from 4 to 37 degree Celsius at infusion rates from 2 - 200 mL/min utilizing thermal battery system or operated indefinitely on AC power. |
