Finding constructive uses for construction waste byproducts contributes to green engineering principles. One such plentiful material is recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). This report looks at the mechanical viability of including RAP in a high strength concrete mix. The mechanical behaviors studied are: freeze-thaw durability, chloride ion penetration, bond strength, ductility, strain-rate, coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity. The tests conducted follow ASTM and AASHTO standards where possible. A few variations to the standards are made to accommodate the limitations of the Idaho State University Laboratory. In each of the tests conducted the RAP mix performed as well or better than the control mix, except for the strain rate tests where the results were inconclusive These results show that the inclusion of RAP coarse aggregate in a high strength mix is a viable solution to achieve a “green” alternative to normal concrete mixes. |
