Artificial Intelligence (AI) will influence the future of war. Like AI, technology has played a tremendous role in the evolution of warfare to date. History is littered with examples of how technology has shaped the course of warfare. Whether it is Napoleon, leveraging the industrial revolution to enhance his ability to convert mere possibility into cast iron achievements of the French Armee, General Helmuth von Moltkes use of the telegraph and railroad to communicate with and mobilize the Prussian Army, or the employment of belt-fed machine guns on a large scale to force the dispersion of western armies in World War I, history is replete with examples. Like the technologies of the past, AI will likely serve as a catalyst for change in the Modern System. This study aspires to contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding AI. It intends to do so by providing the historical context that will serve as a foundation on which to build, create a shared understanding about the current state of AI, and anticipate the potential role of AI in the future of war. |
