Given the burden higher fuel costs have place on the Department, it would be logical to examine if alternative fuels such as Biodiesel would be a cost effective alternative to conventional petroleum base diesel fuel. Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel produced from domestic renewable resources such as soybeans grown in Arkansas. Studies have shown that Biodiesel is a more cost effective alternative to conventional diesel fuel as well as producing fewer emissions and providing lower maintenance costs. Biodiesel has lubricating properties, known as lubricity, that is superior to petroleum diesel. Biodiesel provides additional lubrication to engine parts such as components of the fuel system which means reduced wear and longer component life. The intervals for oil changes could be extended, thus lowering maintenance costs as a result of the biodiesel properties. This study will examine the effect that biodiesel would have on vehicles used by the Department. This study would track four new diesel vehicles of the same model purchased by the Department. Two of the vehicles would burn petroleum diesel and two would use a 20% biodiesel blend know as B-20. Items such as mileage, fuel usage, fuel economy and maintenance would be tracked. Samples of the engine oil would be collected from each oil change from all four vehicles throughout the study. A chemical profile of the oil would then reveal the degree of engine wear. |
