On page 1,691 of the 4,155-page, $1.7 trillion funding package President Joe Biden signed into law December 29, 2022, were four lines that will go a long way in boosting efficiency and capability and growing the workforce for small shipyards in the United States. The bill set aside $20 million in funding for the Maritime Administra- tion's 2023 Small Shipyard Grant Program. Shipyards with fewer than 1,200 production employees are eligible to apply for the grants, which cover a maximum of 75 percent of a projects cost. Eligible projects include capital improvements and training or workforce development programs. According to the law that established the Small Shipyards Grant Program, the Maritime Administration must post a Notice of Funding Opportunity for this round of grants within 15 days of the enactment of the appropriations bill, January 13. |
