U.S. District Court Judge Greg G. Guidry of the Eastern District of Louisiana has ordered Houston-based Great Lakes Dredge & Dock (GLDD), the nations largest provider of dredging services, to pay a $1 million fine for its role in a September 5, 2016, oil spill that occurred on Bay Long near the Chenier Ronquille Island, off the southeastern coast of Louisiana. GLDD pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Water Act in connection with the spill and agreed to pay the $1 million fine a year ago. According to a June 17 announcement from U.S. Attorney Duane Evans, GLDD was officially ordered to pay the fine and a $125 special assessment for its role in the spill on June 14. As part of the contract to complete the Chenier Ronquille Barrier Island Restoration Project, Great Lakes was charged with building a dike around the island, then filling it with sediment. In connec- tion with the contract, oil and gas pipelines in the area were marked, including the "Bay Marchand-to-Ostrica-to-Alliance," or "BOA," pipeline. Great Lakes was responsible for locating and marking pipelines in the area in compliance with the federal Pipeline Safety Act and Louisiana's One Call system. |
