TEN YEARS AGO, a report from the Corps of Engineers downplayed the need for expansion of Mississippi River locks; LeBeouf Bros. Towing christened the mvs. Teddy Meyer and Donnie Sonier, built at Bourg Dry Dock and Intracoastal Iron Works, respectively; and a small workboat sank in the lower approach to Ohio River Lock 52, closing the lock for three days. TWENTY YEARS AGO, the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Wya-conda cleared floating trees from the Upper Mississippi River near Mile 548.5; Southwind Maritime Center in Mount Vernon, Ind., received its first-ever rail shipment of western coal; and the Coast Guard announced a landmark $11.04 billion contract for a fleet of new ships and aircraft. THIRTY YEARS AGO, barge operators criticized a request by Louisville, Ky, to change navigation channels to accommodate a planned recreational marina; barge broker Inland River Logistics opened in New Orleans, La.; and Transportation Secretary Andrew Card told Congress that without action, Americas merchant marine would be "extinct" by 2000. |
