On August 8, the Quincy, Ill., City Council approved spending nearly $4.4 million on the Quincy Regional Barge Dock Elevation Project that will raise the city's barge dock 3-1/2 feet and allow it to stay operational during flood stages, local media sources reported. Engineering Manager Steve Bange told station WGEM that the city has about $1.2 million in state grants in hand, together with another $300,000 that has accumulated since last year from barge dock users and money set aside from the barge dock fund. The project's goal is to raise the barge dock 3-1/2 feet. An access road to the barge dock will also be raised so the dock can continue to operate when the Mississippi River is in flood stages. Bange said the remaining $2.3 million will be paid by a 20-year loan from the city's general fund. The next step, he said, is to sign a contract and give the contractor notice to proceed. He hopes work can begin this fall. |
