A missing retaining ring and mounting bracket on the port main diesel engine led to a towboat engin-eroom fire that caused an estimated $1.8 million in damage, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).The NTSB released its findings October 13 in Marine Safety Bulletin 22/24. The fire took place aboard the mv. Capt. Kirby Dupuis on November 9, 2021, near Belleville, Ky.The vessel was pushing loaded dry cargo barges on the Ohio River when the fire broke out, the NTSB said. Crewmembers fought it with fire extinguishers and attempted to activate the boat's fixed fire-extinguishing system. The six-person crew escaped without injury. No pollution was reported.NTSB investigators reviewed the vessel's video system, which showed lube oil spraying inboard from the port main engine and a flame about 10 seconds later at the top of the forward part of the engine. |
