Cletus John Whelan, riv-erman and former president of a construction firm, passed away October 29 in Columbia, Ill., surrounded by family and friends. Throughout his 92 years, Whelan held many river-related jobs, rising through the ranks to become a leader in the construction industry. He retired as president of Tower Rock Stone, Ste. Genevieve, Mo., and vice president of Luhr Bros. Construction Company of Columbia, Ill. The towboat mv. Cletus, built by Jeffboat and delivered to Luhr Brothers, was named for Whelan. The 102-foot-long vessel had a width of 36 feet, a depth of 10 feet and operating draft of 7 feet 8 inches. He is survived by four children: Michael (Janice) Whelan, James (Vicki) Whelan, Jan (Bill) Walsh and Gene (Pam) Whelan, 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Patricia Ann (Heizer). |
