Stanley Machovec, 88, of St. Paul, Minn., former operator of Machovec's Food Market in St. Paul, died January 27. The market, which was founded by his grandfather in 1893, provided groceries, equipment and help to the barge and towboat industry. According to the Pioneer Press newspaper, Machovec would do everything for towboat crew members, from bailing them out of jail to driving them to doctors appointments or taking them to the airport. Machovec "was considered a true friend of the industry," wrote Steve Rauch, who informed the WJ of Machovec's passing. "Many people who read The Waterways Journal will remember Stan Machovec and all the things he did over the years to support and assist the river business." |
