This report summarizes recent operational experience of a new generation of ocean going coal-fired ships. The experience summarized in this report is based upon direct discussions with shipowners, operators and shipyard as well as data published in the literature. The owners and operators of seven of these new ships give a positive endorsement to the feasibility of coal-fired steam propulsion. They all have had startup problems which will require retrofits to correct. These problems have mainly been with obtaining consistent fuel quality, coal transfer and ash handling system operations. In time the operational problems with coal and ash handling systems will be resolved through better design and application. The best solution for resolving the coal fuel quality problems may lie in the development and application of fluidized bed combuation to marine propulsion. There has been no major loss of revenue or time delays as a result of the problems and all owners Indicate they would select coal-firing for future ships in the same trades. |
