The CO2 corrosion of carbon steel is basically due to the dissolution of CO2 In the produced water, leading to the formation of carbonic acid and a decrease In the in-situ pH, with a corresponding Increase in corrosivity. Instead of combating CO2 corrosion, it can be more cost effective to directly suppress the corrosivity of the transported fluids, either by removing CO2 in a dedicated amine plant, or by neutralizing the carbonic acid via the pH control of hydrate preventers. The two solutions are not equivalent, either technically or economically. The pros and cons are discussed. |
