This paper considers the technical progress in pipeline design and construction related mainly to offshore pipelines. As the subject is very extensive, the paper has been limited to some general subjects covering pipeline design, installation and start-up. The major conclusion is that extensive experiences have been gained during the last 1 i years of pipeline design, installation and operation and especially related to commissioning of large pipeline systems and deep water installation of large diameter pipelines. In the future the use of limit slate pipeline design philosophy, may be implemented as an alternative to the stress based design commonly used today giving a potential for further optimisation of the pipeline design and consequently reduction of the initial investment.
Statoil has for the last 20 years been increasingly involved in offshore pipeline technology. Comprehensive research and development efforts under Statoil's leadership in the second half of the 1970's made it technically feasible to cross the deep-water Norwegian Trench in the 1980's.
Comprehensive research and development efforts within or under Statoil leadership together with similar efforts within the supply industry, significant progress has been made in this field. This has enabled us to construct and install offshore pipeline systems in the period 1970 until today involving increasingly more complex and challenging technical barriers. The pipeline systems Statpipe, Zeepipe, Europipe, Haltenpipe and Troll Oil Pipeline have brought Statoil to the forefront of technical expertise in this field.
