GIS platform conversion issues of the software that performs automated routing of overweight/oversize vehicles for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) are reported. Originally developed in TransCAD platform in Research Study 0-1482, the software was converted and implemented in ArcView at the request of TxDOT’s Information Systems Division (ISD) to comply with the agency’s core GIS technology.
The existing GIS files containing the roads network and bridge locations were exported from TransCAD into ArcView shapefiles. To enable routing capabilities in ArcView, the Network Analyst extension was utilized. In addition, several modifications were made to the Roads GIS files to accommodate for compatibility in the new platform. The routing application runs in conversation with a Visual Basic (VB) program that performs the computations to evaluate the adequacy of the bridges along the given route.
This version of the routing software does not account for turn penalties or obtain maximal-capacity routes as its predecessor version in TransCAD. Another major issue of the conversion is that the bridge attributes can be accessed and retrieved directly from BRINSAP in its original Access format. The new application has been tested and results have been compared with those of the TransCAD version noticing occasional minor differences due to software limitations and considerations.
