A small fleet of light-duty gasoline fueled vehicles were procured and tested over light-duty vehicle emissions test cycles. The project consisted of a pilot study where three vehicles were tested over two test cycles - the light-duty Federal Test Procedure and the ARB's "Unified Cycle" (UC), two fuels - a pre-1992 California gasoline and a California Phase 2 reformulated gasoline, and three technology types - non-catalyst, carbureted with oxidation catalyst, and multi-point fuel injection with three-way catalyst. The main study consisted of 24 vehicles tested over the UC. In addition to total mass emissions, size-segregated mass emissions for 10, 2.5 and 1.0 micrometers were measured. Chemical analyses were performed on a subset often vehicles and included elemental carbon/organic carbon (EC/OC) splits, elements and ions, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hopanes and steranes. In general, results were consistent with results for similar studies performed for the Coordinating Research Council. |
