A geographic information system (GIS) is a tool for effectively managing and analyzing tremendous amounts of geographic information. It employs the essential principle of geography to organize in formation and express relationships between real -world phenomena. In recent years, GIS has become increasingly important in supporting decisions made in all sectors of government, including state departments of transportation (DOTs). Because GIS is a technology that is complex, interactive, and evolutionary, its deveopment and implementation demand careful study of such issues as needs, benefits/costs, specifications, and implementation plans.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has been a lead er in managing highway transportation systems. The GIS pavement management information system (PMIS) project will develop) a comprehensive guide for implementing foe most effective GIS capabilities to support TxDOT pavement management and other transportation-related management. This research will provide comprehensive recommendations for various issues involved in incorporating GIS into foe Texas PMIS.
