The use of cone penetration testing to analyze the behavioral properties of natural deposits (particularly liquefaction potential) is rapidly gaining popularity around the world. However, current practice of estimating properties, of sand deposits by using correlations developed for silica or terrigenous deposits may not be applicable to calcareous soils. Natural aging (cementation) between calcareous particles further complicates our understanding of the behavioral properties of this soil type.
Triaxial static and cyclic strength testing was combined with cone penetrometer testing of calcareous sands in a specially designed calibration chamber, and then compared with results obtained for silica sands of similar gradation. The University of Hawaii Calibration Chamber Facility was constructed specifically for this research effort.
The results indicate that penetration resistance over a range of parallel relative densities is significantly less in the calcareous sand than that observed in the silica sand. Cyclic strengths and friction angles obtained from static strength tests of the calcareous sand were greater than Chose of the silica sand. Aging typically Increased the cyclic strengths and penetration resistance of the calcareous sand. Static strengths, however, appeared relatively unaffected
