TEN YEARS AGO, high water caused lock closures on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers; Algiers Lock was closed indefinitely for repairs; and Raymond & Associates was building a Z-drive towboat, the U.S.S. Cairo, for The Carline Companies. TWENTY YEARS AGO, Jef-fboat launched the second of two 52,000-barrel barges for Vane Bros. Inc.; the New Orleans Engi-neer District finished installing nine mooring buoys in the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal; and the Kansas City Engineer District awarded an emergency $200,000 dredging contract to reopen an impassable stretch of the Missouri River. THIRTY YEARS AGO, the U.S. Engineers christened the new 6,270-hp. mv. Mississippi on the Memphis, Tenn., riverfront; the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway was closed after two tows grounded; and Consol Docks Inc. applied to the Pittsburgh Engineer District for a permit to build a coal transfer facility on the Monon-gahela River from Miles 58.1 to 59.3. |
