Washington, D.C. - House appro-priators learned that more than $400 million in capability has been identified for inland waterways just days after the Biden administration released a budget with no money from the Inland Waterways Trust Fund (IWTF). "Inland waterways are a jewel of our system of water infrastructure in this country," Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Michael Connor told members of Congress. Connor also assured them the Biden administration remains committed to making the necessary investments in the waterways. "I knew this would be an issue in this budget," he said. "I will face the music with the Inland Waterways Users Board." Connor made his comments after joining Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and 55th chief of Engineers, in taking questions from members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water and Related Agencies. At one point during the hearing, Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.) reminded them the waterways industry still supports the program through the diesel tax. |
