In March 1995, the US National Research Council's Committee on Marine Structures (CMS), on behalf of the Ship Structure Committee (SSC), convened a symposium in Washington, D.C., to address the unusually great number of bulk carrier losses and the continuing occurrence of fatigue cracking in relatively new and aging ships. One outcome of this symposium was the requirement for a comprehensive Guide to the design of fatigue resistant details in ships, that would draw together in one volume, the current state of knowledge on the procedures required to calculate fatigue life of structural details. This report provides this Guide. The Guide provides an overview of the Fatigue problem and then provides guidance to practicing designers at three levels of sophistication: At the simplest level there is a Catalogue of good detail design practice. At the next level there is a procedure for calculating the fatigue design procedure using the latest, practical available methods. The Guide also contains a review of the varying approaches of Classification Society and other design codes. Three quite different worked examples are provided to illustrate the methodologies and highlight the necessary assumptions that are made Finally, a comprehensive reference list is provided. The Guide is part of a two part project the other part of which was the organization and presentation of a Short Course on Fatigue and Fracture in Ship Structures, the first of which was held at the Management Center of Michigan State University on August 18-21,1998 |
