Objectives: Reduce the raw-water turbidity as inexpensively as possible and extend existing DE filter life.
R&D Results: Town employees dug test pits near and in the Sandy Creek stream bed adjacent to die impoundment. Soil samples were taken and water infiltration rates into the test holes were measured. Based on in-situ soil infiltration rates, it was determined that an infiltration gallery .should be installed in the stream bed to maintain adequate flow. Soil tests were used to determine the size and type of the infiltration gallery, type of sand pack around the screen, and screen slot size. After installation, sampling was conducted to determine water quality improvements. The increase in fiber runs between backwash events measured project success. Filters runs were increased fi-om less than a day to one to two weeks. The frequency of septum acid-washing was decreased fi-om once every four days to once per month. Annual savings in electricity, DE, and add solutions amount to more than $6,800, representing an 82% decrease in backwash frequency, 65% decrease in DE use, and an 87% decrease in acid and chlorine needed for septum cleaning
